Authoring Across the Miles

Updated: Apr 14, 2021

And we’re live!

If you’re reading, welcome to our website and blog. It’s a place to bring you news and updates about our debut novel for 2021.

So who are we and how did we get here?

Well, for a bit more background about us, you can check out the ‘Bio’ page. In summary, we are a duo with individual writing experience, now in collaboration. We have created what we believe is a psychological thriller to intrigue, entertain and captivate readers.

As friends and colleagues, we have previously worked together in other capacities. Then, last year, came the COVID-19 restrictions and a first national lockdown. Despite being over 100 miles apart, remote working and video meetings were already second nature. With extra time on our hands and a shared passion for writing, we began working together - first on a short form TV script for a BBC Writers Room competition; then moving onto something bigger.

Could we work together across the miles to produce a full-length novel?

We certainly fancied having a shot. We shared some initial ideas and felt inspired by one concept in particular. A shared document to which we could both keep developing the idea was essential. Messages back and forth piqued each other’s interest. Quickly, that initial idea developed into a potential story and we mapped out a first chapter breakdown. We were underway.

Alternating chapters from the perspective of our two main characters meant we could naturally take the lead on writing a chapter each. We both had an idea of what would occur - based on the plan we had made - but it was still exciting to receive a chapter from each other and read how the events were interpreted, how the characters sometimes led us in unexpected directions and what natural new twists found their way into the plot.

As the story progressed, it held all the joy of writing that we both love - but combined it with the fun of reading in order to find out exactly what our characters did or said. We met regularly to refine the progress or reshape the story based on how it was developing. After a completed first draft and several more iterations of refining and redrafting, we had a story which excited us and our initial beta readers.

What next?

We had never really decided beforehand what we would do with a finished story - would we even share or publish? We had come this far though. It felt right to ‘complete’ the process. By the time the story was finished, we were compelled to set it free into the world. We hope that the imagination of many more readers will now be captured by the story.
